The Biomass_cci team are hosting a virtual workshop, on forest biomass change mapping from 19th October – 6th November 2020 (ALL TIMINGS ARE UTC).

This technical workshop will provide the opportunity for scientists, across the globe, charged with generating biomass change maps to formulate the principles that underlie forest biomass change estimation, the problems in doing so and develop meaningful estimates of the accuracy of such change measures.

Over recent years, considerable effort has been placed into generating regional to global maps of above-ground biomass in forests. However, attention is increasingly shifting to quantifying biomass change. This presents a particular challenge because of the wide range and sensitivities of sensors being used for biomass retrieval, differences in algorithms employed, the spatial resolutions and temporal frequencies of mapping and, critically, the statistical aspects of measuring change.

Ensuring robust quantification of changes in forest biomass is essential as there are substantive user requirements for consistent and dependable information, including for climate and carbon science and modelling and national/international agreements, reporting and future planning.

The workshop runs over 3 weeks, but participation is restricted to short periods within that timeframe. A limited number of presentations will be available on the Monday to be watched PRIOR to the live discussions mid-week. Throughout the workshop further discussion will also be available on the "Discuss" forum. No one is expected to attend all live discussions as these revolve around the globe in specific time slots, but everyone should be able to attend at least one per week. We hope that this format will enable plenty of focused and profitable discussion wherever you may be.
