Acerca del proyecto
The Glaciers CCI project develops methods for glacier monitoring from satellite data and applies them to key regions globally.
Glaciers have been selected as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV) due to their sensitive response to climate change. From the estimated 215,000 glaciers worldwide, only a few hundred are regularly monitored in the field. Satellite data provide complementary information with global coverage and contribute substantially to their monitoring.
The Glaciers CCI project creates glacier outline, elevation change and velocity products from a wide range of European and other satellite data to provide important baseline data (glacier inventories) for change assessment in order to better understand glacier response to climate change.
